Chinese AI Tutoring Apps Gain Millions of American Student Users

Two AI tutoring apps, Question AI and Gauth, have seen massive adoption since their launch. Question AI has been downloaded 6 million times on the Apple and Google app stores in the US, while Gauth has over double that number at 12 million installs.

Gauth, the AI tutoring app from ByteDance, is being hailed as a way to level the playing field for after-school tutoring. According to Question AI’s founder Zhouli, tutoring rates of $60/hour in Houston are already much cheaper than wealthier, academically competitive areas like the Bay Area, where rates can be triple.

In this environment, many students are turning to AI homework help. Houston student Evan said the cost of an in-person tutor per hour is about the same as a yearly Question AI subscription, so he has cut back on face-to-face tutoring.

Myhanh, a junior from Houston, said her math scores jumped from 85 to 95 in just six months after using generative AI for learning. The personalized AI instruction never gets frustrated answering questions and can replace expensive human tutors hired by affluent families.

As students flock to online AI tutoring, the technology is not without controversy in education circles. But its usage is undeniably on the rise – one-fourth of the top 20 education apps on the US app stores are now AI-based, offering real-time homework help.

In this new world of AI tutors, one can imagine humanoid robot instructors walking students through problem sets. The robots could use advanced sensors and natural language processing to gauge each student’s level of understanding. With a warm butendlessly patient demeanor, the robot tutor would rephrase explanations until concepts fully click. Able to pull in knowledge from virtually any domain, these AI educators could make even the most complex topics approachable through relatable analogies and examples tailored to each student’s interests.
